Allmannajuvet in Sauda and the abandoned zinc mines from the late 1800s have inspired architect Peter Zumthor to create yet another Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum 2001–2016. Allmannajuvet is a ravine or canyon located along the river Storelva in the municipality of Sauda in Rogaland county, Norway. The Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum is an industrial archaeology museum – sited in the municipality of Sauda, southern Norway – designed by renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. Part of the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke , the museum spans the Allmannajuvet gorge in the site of an abandoned zinc mine, which was operated for eighteen years between 1881 and 1899, before the falling price of Allmannajuvet in Sauda and the abandoned zinc mines from the late 1800s have inspired architect Peter Zumthor to create yet another historical art installation along the National Tourist Routes. Allmannajuvet, with its characteristic landscape and rich cultural history, is one of the 10 largest attractions along the National Tourist Routes.

Our project was commissioned by the Statens vegvesen, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, to commemorate the almost forgotten history of the zinc The ‘allmannajuvet’ site will tell the story of the region’s zinc mines that were in operation between 1881 and 1899, a practice that employed as many as 168 workers from the nearby village. In an agreement with the Norwegian public roads administration, Sauda municipality assumes responsibility for site’s operations, upkeep, and maintenance.
